Manti Te'o's 40-Yard-Dash Was Slightly Better Than His Last 40-Yard-Dash
After an unimpressive time at the NFL combine, Manti Te'o gave the 40-yard-dash another shot at Notre Dame's pro day in South Bend. And true to his word, Te'o beat his old mark by about a tenth of a second. Fast? Faster, at least.
With a 4.82 at the combine, scouts were unimpressed . Chased off by sub-standard speed and some other stuff, some prognosticators even had Te'o dropping out of the first round. But then he went and did this:
Forty-yard-dash times are notoriously unscientific, especially with the hand-timed runs at pro days. (A bunch of guys get together with their stopwatches, compare notes, one decides maybe he was a little slow to hit the start button, subtracts a few hundredths, and they come up with a time.) Sure enough, Te'o's times, depending on who you ask, were anywhere from 4.68 to 4.75.
The drill, of course, measures a player's acceleration and straight-line speed over a predetermined distance with no obstacles, a situation that a linebacker will never ever face in the NFL. So Te'o's draft prospects shouldn't swing one way or the other: Mike Mayock still has him as a late first-rounder.
Te'o said today he won't attend the draft in New York on April 25.
