LeBron Opts Out Of Cavs Contract, But He Probably Isn't Going Anywhere

The idea of LeBron James signing with a different subpar team every season and dragging them to the Finals would make for an entertaining project, but that probably won’t happen, even though James reportedly decided to decline his player option with the Cavaliers.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst explained that although James would be able to sign with anyone, he “intends to re-sign with his current team.” Barring some unexpected rift, James won’t talk to any other teams, and plans to wait everything out while GM David Griffin makes his way through free agency. Even though Kevin Love had a rocky experience with the Cavs at times, he appears to at least be open to coming back:

Windhorst predicts that James will end up with another one-year contract with a player option for the following season, because James wants a contingency plan, and it’s the smart choice. The current salary cap prevents the best player in the league from getting money representative of his skills. When the NBA’s new, valuable TV deal kicks in before the 2016-17 season, that’ll bump salaries for a lot of players. Of course, that’s assuming all goes well.
