Layoffs Hit Sports Illustrated [UPDATED]

Sports Illustrated has laid off a number of staffers, according to multiple sources, as a part of approximately 40 layoffs of editorial staffers across Time Inc. properties, that POLITICO reported began on Thursday. This comes a week after 110 Time Inc. sales and advertising staffers were laid off, a month after a broader Time Inc. organizational shuffle that included Chris Stone stepping into Paul Fichtenbaum’s shoes as editorial director of Sports Illustrated, Golf, and SI Kids, and 17 months after SI laid off its remaining staff photographers.

Longtime SI NFL writer Don Banks announced yesterday that he was laid off, and we’ve heard a couple of other prominent names that we’re working to confirm.

UPDATE (4:55 p.m. ET): According to multiple sources, college football writer and investigative reporter Thayer Evans was laid off, while executive editor B.J. Schecter is leaving SI by mutual agreement. Neither responded to an email requesting comment.

We have been told that four full-time employees were laid off, while roughly another 10 either took buyouts or were not on full time contracts. One of them, Nick Forrester, updated his Twitter bio to read “Sports reporter for hire. Former @CampusRush producer, @SINow writer.”
