Kentucky Survives Double-Overtime Scare From Texas A&M
For the second conference game in a row, number one ranked and previously unbeatable-looking Kentucky was taken to overtime by an unheralded opponent, this time Texas A&M. Perhaps the SEC is tougher than we thought?
Kentucky looked disjointed the entire game. Their big men—the three starting forwards only put up 14 shots, making five of them—were barely involved on offense, leaving the playmaking to fall on the shoulders of the guards. Specifically, twin brothers Andrew and Aaron Harrison, who combined to shoot a ghastly 6-30.
So how did Kentucky win with their starters shooting 11-44? With their defense. As muddled as their offense looked, their defense rendered Texas A&M just as woeful, shooting 33% from the field and 13% from three. Texas A&M's loss was also self-inflicted, as they barely made half of their 30 free throws. It was an UGLY game for both teams. But in a surprisingly display of offensive competence, Kentucky finally got it together in the second overtime, missing only one shot and no free throws to finally pull away 70-64.
