Dallas led by a point at halftime and by four points after three quarters in a game in which there were 20 lead changes.
Mitchell canned a 3-pointer with 1:58 to play to give Indiana a four-point advantage and hit a pair of free throws with 1:15 remaining to push the lead to six.
The Fever (17-16) held on to win their fourth straight game and move above .500 for the first time this season.
Caitlin Clark recorded 28 points and 12 assists for Indiana, marking her 15th game of the season with more than 20 points. NaLyssa Smith added 14 points for the Fever.
Arike Ogunbowale racked up 34 points to lead the Wings (9-23), who had a season-best three-game win streak snapped. Satou Sabally added 25 points, Natasha Howard scored 18 and Teaira McCowan grabbed 11 rebounds for Dallas.
The Wings forged a 9-0 surge midway through the first quarter to leapfrog from a 10-6 deficit to a 15-10 lead, with back-to-back 3-pointer by Ogunbowale punctuating the run. Indiana rallied to retake the lead at 19-18 after Clark's layup, but Ogunbowale responded with another three, her fifth in the quarter, to help Dallas carry a 23-19 after 10 minutes of play.
A jumper and then a 3-pointer by Mitchell, the latter with 8:27 to play in the second quarter, put the Fever back on top. The rest of the period featured three ties and five lead changes, the final of which came on an Ogunbowale layup with 2 seconds remaining to grant Dallas a 46-45 edge at the break.
