Jason Babin Was Released By The Eagles
Jason Babin may have lost his mind yesterday, but he definitely lost his job today. The Eagles announced his release earlier today. In 27 games for the Eagles, Babin had 23.5 sacks. The main problem was that 18 of those sacks came last season.
Andy Reid, with no job security of his own, released a brief statement:
"We appreciate everything that Jason has given this team over the last couple of years. We wish him all the best as he continues his career. By releasing him today, this gives us an opportunity to give more playing time to some younger guys in the defensive line rotation."
Earlier this year, Babin strongly supported the "Wide Nine" defensive scheme put in place by d-line coordinator Jim Washburn. Babin has thrived under Washburn in Philly and Tennessee, but wilted anywhere else. Although the Eagles racked up sacks, Wide Nine failed at every other aspect. With the defense undergoing a complete makeover, Babin's won't be the last surprising release in Philadelphia.
Babin was in the second year of a five-year, $27 million contract, but his contract is backloaded enough to make his early release fairly friendly to the Eagles. Where does he go from here, though? Albert Breer points out that any team that claims him on waivers will pay $1.64 million (the rest of his season's salary), for five games. But if he clears waivers? There are plenty of teams who could use a 4-3 edge rusher.
