Jarrod Dyson Bunts To Break Up Justin Verlander's Perfect Game In The Sixth Inning
For a while tonight, Justin Verlander looked as sharp as he ever has. Through the first out of the sixth inning, he was perfect, with 10 strikeouts for his stat line and the cushion of a 4-0 lead. And then Jarrod Dyson decided that he was okay with flouting convention in order to give himself the best possible shot at doing his job and getting aboard, laying down a bunt to get on base and set the groundwork for a three-run inning for the Mariners:
With Dyson on first, Verlander was visibly shaken—walking Mike Zunino, allowing singles to Jean Segura and Ben Gamel, and finally giving up a double to Nelson Cruz that signaled the end of his night. The perfect game, the no-hitter, the four-run lead, and the chance to redeem himself by pitching any further: all gone. The Mariners went on to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. Life comes at you fast.
Update (1:35 a.m. ET): Seattle wins, 7-5. Blessed be those who laugh in the face of silly rules in order to do their jobs; cursed be the Detroit bullpen.
