Horse Loses Jockey Yards From The Wire, Costing Bettor $571,000
Gulfstream Park in Florida has something called the Rainbow 6, a pick-six that carries over each day if there’s not a single unique winner. For a mere 20 cents, bettors, if they select the winners of the day’s final six races, walk away with big money—on Thursday, the jackpot stood at $571,744. One better nailed the first five; in the last race, he had Cryogenic, an 8-1 shot. Cryogenic pulled away down the stretch. And then? Well, this was painful for everyone involved.
Just before the wire, Cryogenic apparently ducked from the whip of jockey Emisael Jaramillo, causing Jaramillo to lose his balance and fall from his mount, disqualifying the horse. For whoever thought he had the Rainbow 6 won, that’s one hell of a bad beat.
Jaramillo got stepped on, but it could have been much, much worse. He was taken to the hospital complaining of chest pain, but reportedly suffered no serious injuries and is expected to be released this morning. According to his agent, Jaramillo hopes to ride today.
