High School Football Player Dies After Injury On Punt Return
In the fourth quarter of a high school football game last night in Winnsboro, La., Tyrell Cameron — a sophomore on Franklin Parish High — sustained a fatal neck injury on a punt return. He was stretchered off and taken to Franklin Medical, where he was pronounced dead. He was 16 years old.
USA Today spoke to a former teammate who said:
“He was humble,” Monnin said late Friday night. “He was very instinctive and had overwhelming potential. We would tell him how good he was going to be and he never accepted it. He would just flash us a grin and shake his head.
“He listened to coaching and advice from upperclassmen. He listened to everything somebody would tell him. He worked hard and would pay attention to little things, man. He would pay attention to how big splits were on the offensive line, to see if we’re pulling or not. He was a great guy.”
KNOE reports that Cameron broke his neck, although an autopsy has yet to confirm this. Earlier this week, a JV running back in Texas was paralyzed from the waist down after he also broke his neck.
