Guy Who Got Serious About Tennis After High School Reaches Wimbledon's Third Round
Photo: Michael Steele/ [object Object] Twenty-one-year-old Austrian Sebastian Ofner—who reportedly only started playing tennis seriously after he graduated secondary school two years ago; who was ranked No. 217 in the world; who had never played above a Challenger-level tournament before Wimbledon; who has earned only $46,193 in his career; and who made it to the main draw after three rounds of qualifying—just beat World No. 17 American Jack Sock in five sets to advance to the third round of tennis’s most famous Grand Slam.
According to Austrian newspaper Der Standard, he has played only 16 Challenger level matches, 14 of them this year.
Ofner, who’s coached by Dominic Thiem’s dad, instantly jumped to No. 150 in the world.
