Former Heisman Winner Rashaan Salaam Dead At 42
Photo Credit: Adam Nadel/ [object Object] Rashaan Salaam, winner of the 1994 Heisman Trophy and former Chicago Bears running back, was found dead outside a Boulder, Colo. park Monday night. He was 42.
According to a report from the Daily Camera, the body of a middle-aged man was found in the parking lot of Eben G. Fine Park. The passerby phoned the police around 8:54 p.m. Salaam was pronounced dead on the scene by officials. No cause of death has been announced; police say there was no suspected foul play, per a Colorado Buffaloes press release.
Salaam made his name rushing for Bill McCartney’s Colorado squads in the 1990s. After accruing 1,002 yards and nine scores in his first two years, Salaam broke out as a junior, rushing for 2,055 yards and 24 TDs. Colorado finished 11-1, and Salaam picked up the 1994 Heisman.
The Bears used their first-round draft pick on Salaam in the 1995 NFL Draft. He would play for the Bears for four seasons until 1999, when he had brief stints with the Cleveland Browns and Green Bay Packers. He ended his NFL career with 33 appearances.
