Former Georgetown Basketball Tough Guy Wins $1 Million Lottery Prize
Michael Graham is best remembered as the dunking Georgetown player who appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated after the Hoyas beat Houston to win the NCAA title in 1984. Today, the 6-foot-9 former power forward claimed a million bucks in Powerball winnings from the D.C. lottery.
He plans to invest part of his winnings into his waste management consulting company and to donate to charity.
Graham says he discovered he had won the second-place prize several days after the March 16 drawing. He contacted the lottery last week.
"I had to get my thoughts together," he says.
Known as an enforcer who protected Patrick Ewing, Graham played just one season before being booted off the team by coach John Thompson Jr. because of academic concerns. In our friend Alan Siegel's recent oral history of the '80's-era Hoyas for the Washington City Paper, rapper Chuck D had this to say about Graham: "He was a bald head in the middle of everybody wearing the jheri curls, the afros, the shags. That was a fuckin’ statement. It reminded me of the dude in Cooley High. I felt the fuck out of that."
