Football Hot Seat: Mike McDaniel, Billy Napier, Sam Pittman Lead Odds for Next Firing
Less than one month into the football season both in the pros and college, there is a lot of discussion on head coaches that will be fired.
Amazingly, instead of looking forward to the NFL or college football playoffs, several of these men are already on the hot seat and some were already ejected.
UCLA already pulled the plug on the Deshaun Foster experiment after a rough September. Longtime Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy was let go on Tuesday after 21 seasons in Stillwater.
The favorite for the next college coach to be handed his walking papers is Florida’s Billy Napier at +150. The Gators are off to an abysmal 1-3 start and in the thick of an impossible schedule — at LSU, at Miami and hosting Texas — that doesn't get "easy" at any point.
Napier saved his job last season by leading Florida to three straight wins to close the season prior to a victory in the Gasparilla Bowl over Tulane.
Another SEC coach is in the danger zone according to the odds.
Arkansas’ Sam Pittman sits at 2/1 to be fired in Fayetteville after the Razorbacks blew an 18-point lead in last Saturday’s loss at Memphis. The Hogs posted a 7-6 record in 2024, but lost their final three SEC games.
In the NFL, Mike McDaniel is the overwhelming favorite to be the first coach gone this season.
Miami plays a second consecutive game in primetime and the attention under the spotlight will be glaring. The Dolphins started 0-3 after missing the playoffs last season and a national TV loss to the winless Jets at home next Monday night could be the end of the line.
Titans second-year head coach Brian Callahan has a top draft pick at quarterback with Cam Ward, but the Titans’ offense has been putrid this season with an 0-3 start. Callahan, now 3-17 since being hired in 2024, might have some leeway with a rookie signal-caller.
However, Tennessee could easily go awhile without a victory and the current front office was hired in January and did not select Callahan as coach.
The Giants switched up the quarterback this week to rookie Jaxson Dart, replacing veteran Russell Wilson. New York could switch up its head coach next.
Brian Daboll has not been able to reclaim the magic of a run to the playoffs in 2022. The Giants have limped to a 9-28 record since 2023. If the Giants continue to track southward in the standings, Daboll may not last long to see Dart’s ascension at quarterback.
