Entire Umpiring Crew Forgets What The Count Is

Home plate umpire Ted Barrett lost track of the count on Astros outfielder Preston Tucker as he faced Angels pitcher Nick Tropeano in the second inning of today’s game. Tucker had a full count, but after Tropeano threw ball four, nothing happened. Houston manager A.J. Hinch had to challenge the play in order for anyone to notice.

Barrett conferred with the rest of his crew until they realized they, too, had no clue what the count was. To the review booth!

The video replay confirmed that yes, Preston Tucker had earned a walk. After Barrett sent Tucker to first, Angels skipper Mike Scioscia came out to get an explanation, which must have been a really good conversation.

That wasn’t the only umpiring gaffe. Three innings later, the officiating crew ruled Carlos Correa out on a stolen base when replay indicated he was safe. Hinch challenged that call and somehow lost.
