Don't Worry, Rest Of College Football, Alabama's Only Getting The Leading High School Rusher Of All Time Next Year
It's been a good week for college football teams not named "Alabama" because they've been able to bask in the notion, however mistaken, that the gap Alabama between themselves and Alabama is closing. A loss to Texas A&M dropped the Crimson Tide to a previously unthinkable 9-1, and now the team finds itself fourth—fourth!—in the BCS standings behind the unbeatens: Oregon, Kansas State and Notre Dame. They may not even play in the championship game—in fact, the championship game may be played by teams from the Big 12 and Pac-12. The state of Alabama would be holding its nose, if it got up this early. Yep, it looks like from here on out, there will be a new age of parity in the—wait, what's that noise?
Oh, it's four-star ( maybe five, depending on who you ask) Alabama recruit, 6-3, 240 pound Derrick Henry shattering the all-time high school rushing record, which stood for 59 years until last night. Henry blew by the old record, set by Ken Hall (for whom the Hall Trophy, awarded to the nation's most outstanding high school player, is named) in the process of helping Yulee high school, of Florida, advance in the playoffs. Hall's old record was 11,232 yards; the new one—for now, Yulee still has more games to play—is 11,612 yards, to go with 148 touchdowns. Henry has never failed to top 100 yards in a game. From FlaVarsity.com:
Henry carried the ball 58 times, scored six times and racked up 482 yards - shattering the career mark formerly held by Sugarland (Tex.) High School's Ken Hall
"This is our team's record," Henry said in the post-game gathering. "We worked all summer long for this. We did it - not me - we."
Taylor County might disagree with the 'not me' part. It seemed the Bulldogs found tackling Henry akin to grabbing a greased pig. A very big greased pig.
Yee haw! Henry says he's helping Nick Saban recruit Laremy Tunsil, the highest-rated offensive lineman in the country, to Alabama as well. So...yeah. 'Bama fans: cheer up, you might end up being pretty good next year. Other fans: uh, remember when A&M beat Alabama? That was neat.
