Deshaun Watson Is Extremely Fun And Seemingly Untouchable
Photo: David J. Phillip/ [object Object] For the second straight week, Texans QB Deshaun Watson tied the NFL rookie record by being responsible for five touchdowns. Even though Houston lost to the Chiefs, 42-34, and some of Watson’s scoring came in garbage time, the QB still looked a hell of a lot better than Tom Savage.
This may be blasphemy, given that Watson’s only started a handful of games, but at his best, he manages a collapsing pocket like Aaron Rodgers. Watson has the mix of finesse and strength that allows him to dance around and evade pass rushers before he uses his arm strength to fire off spectacular, accurate bombs. It’s underselling Watson’s talent to say that he “extends plays,” like when he embarrassed the Patriots’ entire line in Week 3:
Or last night, when he shrugged off Kansas City defensive lineman Rakeem Nunez-Roches, listed at 306 pounds, and threw a perfect 48-yard strike to a sufficiently covered Will Fuller:
Watson, who completed only 16 of 31 passes and was mostly playing catchup, still has more work to do, but the early returns are encouraging, and incredibly fun to watch. After too many seasons of middling quarterbacks, the Texans must be thrilled to find a quarterback who won’t be the weakest part of the offense.
