College Football Coaches, By The Positions They Played
CBS Sports has a fun little exercise to get you ready for the return of college football, which begins in, oh, 27 hours: it's a ranking of the playing careers of each and every FBS head coach. You know who number one is.
Almost as fun is the parsing of their playing careers. Above is a chart breaking down what positions were played by the 119 of 128 coaches who made it to the collegiate level or higher. You'll notice that the frequencies don't correlate with the reported Wonderlic scores by position, which does make sense—football intelligence isn't the same as cognitive ability. QBs and DBs tend to need to have a wider view of the action, and to know what just about everyone on the field is doing at all times. There's a reason they tend to be unit captains.
