Coach Accused Of Telling Players To Tackle Ref Pleads Guilty To Misdemeanor Assault

Former John Jay High School (Texas) football coach Mack Breed pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault and was sentenced to 18 months probation for his role in a September incident where two players blindsided referee Robert Watts.

Players Victor Rojas and Michael Moreno told that Watts used anti-Hispanic racial slurs, and that a coach told them they needed to hit Watts. They later said that coach was Breed. Breed resigned from the school and AP reports that John Jay principal Robert Harris said Breed admitted he told Rojas and Moreno to hit Watts. Per the terms of his plea agreement, however, Breed did not admit guilt. His lawyer gave this statement:

“Mack felt that he made a mistake that evening, and he felt the best thing for him to do was to take responsibility, put it behind him and move forward with his life,” said James Reeves, Breed’s San Antonio-based attorney.

In addition to his 18 months of probation, Breed was fined $1,500 and ordered to serve 120 hours of community service.
