Chris Sale Strikes Out 10, Gets Only Extra-Base Hit For Red Sox, Still Loses
Photo Credit: Drew Hallowell/ [object Object] Chris Sale pitched seven shutout innings against the Phillies before giving up just one run in the eighth. He allowed five baserunners over his complete game. He struck out 10. He got the only extra-base hit of the game for the Red Sox (and the first of his career), in the form of an eighth-inning leadoff double to left. And he walked away with nothing to show for it, as Boston fell 1-0 to Philadelphia.
In short, he suffered a loss extremely reminiscent of his time with the blighted White Sox.
So many strikeouts! Alas.
The Red Sox were stymied at the plate by Phillies rookie Nick Pivetta, who pitched his best game so far—striking out nine and going past the fifth inning for the first time in his seven starts with seven shutout innings. Ty Kelly, meanwhile, played an unlikely hero for the Phillies’ offense with his RBI double in the eighth for the game’s lone run.
