Captain Of FIU Women's Basketball Team Says Coach Spent Season Sexually Harassing Her
Junior guard Destini Feagin, who is the captain of the Florida International University women’s basketball team, tells the that head coach Marlin Chinn sexual harassed her several times this season, and suspended her when she refused to have a sexual relationship with him.
There are a lot of details to pick through in the , and they are all very gross. Feagin tells the paper that Chinn began making advances on her soon after FIU hired him last year. Feagin says that after Chinn spent a few weeks making inappropriate comments about her appearance, he eventually told her that he wanted to be in a relationship with her. From the story:
Feagin said a few weeks later, the week of Jan. 18 as the team prepared for home games against Texas-San Antonio and Texas-El Paso, Chinn asked about her personal life. Feagin said when she casually complained about men, he replied with, “Oh, yeah, if I had it my way, you’d be my girl. If I was in school, you’d be my girl.”
After practice, Feagin said, she went back to Chinn’s office to clarify what he meant and he said, “I have sexual fantasies about you.”
The Herald’s story cites inappropriate text messages sent to Feagin’s phone from a number listed as “Coach Chinn.” One text, sent on Feb. 7, urged Feagin to take a Five Love Languages test, and read, “Take this test and screen shot me your results!! Let me see what you working with!! Answer as HONEST AS YOU CAN!!!”
Feagin also let the Herald listen to a recorded conversation she had with Chinn, during which the coach says to Feagin, “When you decide that we lay down together, I want you to want it more than I do. And I’m not going to force you to do that. But that’s how I’ve always been. I’m not going to push you.”
Feagin says she reported Chinn’s harassment to the school and the NCAA last Thursday. The next day, she was scratched from the team’s senior night ceremony and was suspended for the rest of the season.
