Cam Newton: Ed Hochuli Said I Wasn't "Old Enough" To Get A Call
Panthers quarterback Cam Newton stirred up some drama during his postgame press conference yesterday, claiming that muscle-bound referee Ed Hochuli told him he wasn’t “old enough” to earn a personal foul call.
The play in question happened early in the fourth quarter, when Newton was shoved to the ground by Saints defensive end Tyeler Davison while running toward the sideline. Newton thought Davison hit him late, and claims that when he complained to Hochuli about there being no flag on the play, he received what amounted to a verbal head-pat:
He said, “Cam, you’re not old enough to get that call.”
I looked at him like: “Jesus! I didn’t think you had to have seniority to get a personal foul or anything like that.”
“It’s one thing to be frustrated in a situation where you see a personal foul on the opposing quarterback get called. And then for me, when it’s something around that same range and for that flag not to be called, I’m ticked off, really.”
“If he would have said he missed the call, that is one thing, but for his response to be what it was and I’m not old enough to get that call... Geez!”
Watching the aftermath of the play, you can see Newton grousing about the no-call, followed by Hochuli saying something that very clearly exasperates Newton:
Hochuli has yet to comment on the issue, but Pro Football Talk spoke to “league sources” who say that Hochuli denies that he said anything to Newton about his age.
