California's Endless Drought Cruelly Menaces Innocent Sushi Prices
Well, you finally did it, humans. You finally fucked up the ecosystem enough to imperil something that matters. No, not the millions of innocent human beings whose access to potable water is threatened by what appears more and more to be the end of rain- and snowfall in California. No. The sushi, dammit. The price of sushi rice.
The current Californian drought is now more than two years old; the hardest-hit area includes its largest, uh, produce-producing regions, where farmers, in anticipation of severely restricted access to water, have planted about 25 percent fewer acres of rice this year. Most of America's sushi rice comes from this area. That shit's about to get ... [ominous music] ... somewhat more expensive.
Listen. If the thought of having to plunk down an extra $1.50 for a serving of avocado rolls doesn't make you want to drop to your knees, shake your fists at the sky, and scream, "You maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!" then clearly you do not care about the environment. Well, it's time to start caring. It's time to start acting. It's time to make a difference.
