Buster Posey's Foot Bent The Wrong Way After A Home Plate Collision Last Night
Scott Cousins sealed a Marlins win in the 12th inning last night, by way of a full-force collision with Giants catcher Buster Posey at home plate. The tackle left Posey with a serious leg injury (in the last second-to-last angle here, especially, you can see his right ankle bend in such a way that it looks like he's attempting to stand on his toes, only his body is horizontal), and he'll have MRI results on Thursday.
The collision inspired Posey's agent, Jeff Berry, to call for a change to the league's rules for plays at the plate.
"You leave players way too vulnerable," Berry told ESPN. "If you go helmet to helmet in the NFL, it's a $100,000 fine, but in baseball, you have a situation in which runners are [slamming into] fielders. It's brutal. It's borderline shocking. It just stinks for baseball. I'm going to call Major League Baseball and put this on the radar. Because it's just wrong."
Cousins insists he wasn't trying to hurt Posey, and there's nothing in the play that suggests otherwise. He was, after all, doing what the game allows in the best interest of his team. "It's a baseball play," he said after the game. For now, he's right.
