Brewers Pitcher Will Smith Tore His Knee While Trying To Take Off His Shoes
Photo via [object Object] Spring training is the worst time for a ballplayer to get injured, but for some reason, every spring training injury happens to be a very dumb injury. Last year, we had Michael Saunders stepping on a sprinkler head and tearing his meniscus, Scooter Gennett cutting his finger on a stray shampoo bottle, and Chris Sale stepping off a truck and breaking his foot. This one is dumber than all of them.
Brewers reliever Will Smith was standing on one foot trying to take off the shoe on his other foot, when he slipped, twisted his knee, and popped his LCL. ESPN has more:
Smith said he was getting ready to shower after pitching in a minor league game Thursday and was standing on one leg to take off his other shoe when he lost his balance and twisted the knee.
“I pulled hard [on the shoe] and it stayed on,” he said. “My knee just went up and popped. Everyone tells you there is nothing you can do about it, but you still feel like you are letting people down.”
Management said that Smith will miss significant time. Brian Griese hurting his ankle after one of his dogs knocked him down the stairs in 2002 is still the best dumb injury of all time.
