Mandatory Credit: Benny Sieu-Imagn Images Jose Quintana threw 5 2/3 quality innings and Christian Yelich slugged one of three Milwaukee home runs as the Milwaukee Brewers posted a 5-1 victory over the visiting Detroit Tigers on Wednesday afternoon.
Quintana (2-0) allowed one run on four hits, while striking out four and walking three. Rhys Hoskins had a two-run homer and Sal Frelick connected on his first home run of the season, as the Brewers took two of three from Detroit.
Detroit starter Keider Montero (0-1) gave up five earned runs on eight hits but struck out eight and walked just one. Spencer Torkelson's solo home run accounted for all of the Tigers' scoring. Javier Baez finished with a pair of hits for Detroit, which has dropped three of four games.
Quintana worked around three first-inning walks before Montero struck out three in the bottom of the first, despite allowing Yelich and William Contreras' singles.
Milwaukee struck first in the second as Garrett Mitchell hit a one-out triple and later scored on an Oliver Dunn sacrifice bunt.
The Brewers tacked on in the third, when Yelich launched his fourth homer of the year -- a 404-foot solo shot -- and Hoskins belted a two-run homer three batters later to extend the lead to 4-0.
Detroit cracked the scoreboard with Torkelson's solo homer in the sixth, his sixth of the season. After Quintana struck out Riley Greene, Baez reached on an error, and Abner Uribe replaced the Milwaukee starter after 100 pitches.
The Brewers got the run back in the home half of the sixth, as Frelick's first home run of the year gave Milwaukee a 5-1 edge. After Hoskins singled, Montero was relieved by Brant Hurter.
Trevor Megill pitched the ninth for the Brewers, allowing Dillon Dingler's one-out single, before Kerry Carpenter grounded into a game-ending double play.
