Brazil stuns USWNT with winner in 2nd-half stoppage time

Mandatory Credit: Kelley L Cox-Imagn Images Amanda Gutierres scored in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time, giving Brazil a stunning 2-1 victory over the U.S. women's national team in a friendly at San Jose, Calif., on Tuesday.
Gutierres had entered the match only two minutes earlier but was out front on a break when Luany spotted her unmarked in the middle of the box.
Catarina Macario scored against her native country after just 34 seconds for the seventh-fastest goal in USWNT history before Kerolin tied it for Brazil in the 24th minute.
It was a perfect start for the U.S., which gained possession in its own half of the field after the kickoff and Alyssa Thompsom made a long run into the box. Her shot was blocked, but the ball popped free directly in front of the net, where Macario pounced on it for her 10th goal in her 23rd international match.
Macario was born in Sao Luis, Brazil, before moving to San Diego at the age 12. She played against her birth country for the second time.
The first was when the U.S. defeated Brazil 2-0 in Inglewood, Calif., on Saturday in their first meeting since the American's 1-0 victory in the gold-medal match of the 2024 Olympics in Paris on Aug. 10.
Macario missed the Olympics because of a knee injury.
Kerolin took advantage of a defensive breakdown to find the equalizer off an assist by Gio Garbelini.
Brazil survived a wild sequence in the 35th minute when two attempts by Thompson and another by Lily Yohannes were blocked at close range and a shot from outside the box from Tara McKeown was off target.
U.S. coach Emma Hayes made numerous changes from Saturday and fielded a starting lineup that averaged 17.9 appearances for the most inexperienced U.S. team in 24 years.
Among them were Alyssa and Gisele Thompson, marking the fifth time in USWNT history sisters started the same match. The same pair started against Australia on Feb. 23 of this year. Samantha and Kristie Mewis started together three times.
