Boys' Doubles Team Forced To Change Out Of Black Underpants At Wimbledon
The dress code at Wimbledon is strict and inflexible: Outfits must be “almost entirely white,” with only a single trim of color “no wider than one centimetre,” which includes all accessories and “ny undergarments that either are or can be visible during play (including due to perspiration).” Today, a doubles team learned how closely officials follow the letter of the law.
In 2013, Roger Federer’s orange-soled shoes prompted a crackdown of the rules. In 2015, a sliver of Genie Bouchard’s black sports bra raised some eyebrows. Earlier in this year’s tournament, Venus Williams was forced to change clothes because a sliver of her pink sports bra was showing. And today, Wimbledon policed some boys’ underwear.
The No. 1 seeds in the boys’ doubles draw, 18-year-olds Zsombor Piros of Hungary and Yibing Wu of China, were told to change their dark underwear because it violated the dress code. Someone appeared with some white undies; the boys left the court and returned, laughing sheepishly. Despite wearing borrowed underwear, they won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
