Blackhawks halt 7-game slide, extend Flyers' woes
Mar 23, 2025; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Chicago Blackhawks center Joe Veleno (90) celebrates after his goal against the Philadelphia Flyers during the first period at United Center. Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn Images Ryan Donato scored twice and Tyler Bertuzzi notched a goal and two assists as the Chicago Blackhawks snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 7-4 home victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday.
Connor Bedard, Joe Veleno and Pat Maroon each registered a goal and an assist for Chicago (21-41-9, 51 points), which had been 0-6-1 in its previous seven games. The Blackhawks had only scored 10 goals during their seven-game slide before torching Flyers goalie Ivan Fedotov for seven goals on 29 shots.
Travis Konecny and Jamie Drysdale each contributed a goal and an assist for Philadelphia (28-35-9, 65 points), which has lost five games in a row. Travis Sanheim and Bobby Brink also scored against Chicago netminder Spencer Knight, who finished with 24 saves.
After Philadelphia took an early 1-0 lead, Chicago scored two goals in a span of 47 seconds.
First, Nick Foligno made a nifty setup to Maroon to tie the score at 1-1. Then, Veleno unleashed a wrister from the right circle to record his first goal since coming over in a trade with the Detroit Red Wings earlier this month.
The lead didn't last long, however, as Sanheim scored 12 seconds later when his seemingly harmless shot from the blue line snuck past Knight.
Less than four minutes later, Brink scored from the doorstep to put the Flyers ahead 3-2.
Bedard capped the hectic first period with his 20th of the season with 1:48 remaining - a nasty wrister just under the crossbar.
Following the six-goal first period, the teams combined for four more goals in the second.
Bertuzzi's backhander 2 ½ minutes into the period put Chicago in front 4-3 before Donato scored a pair of power-play goals, bookended around a tally by Konecny.
Donato's 24th came on a redirection of a feed from Teuvo Teravainen with the Blackhawks skating 5-on-3. His 25th was another nifty redirection off a centering pass by Teravainen, making it 6-4 about midway through the game.
The lone goal of the third was scored by Lukas Reichel just over two minutes into the stanza.
