Instead, the Houston Astros third baseman will rehab with the hopes of returning for a potential World Series run.
Astros general manager Dana Brown told reporters that Paredes, 26, received a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection and will need to undergo a "long period of letting it rest" before he can begin exercising again.
"In his whole opinion on this, he wants to work hard to try and get back this season," Brown said before Houston's game against the Miami Marlins on Monday. "Of course, he's going to dedicate himself to getting back."
A two-time All-Star, including this season, Paredes has missed the past 14 games after suffering the injury on July 19 in Seattle. After seeking multiple opinions on the best course of action, Paredes chose to rehab -- especially after some suggested he undergo surgery, which could carry a recovery time of at least six months.
While Brown did not specify the grade of strain Paredes suffered, he emphasized that the injury was "significant" and "enough that it could require surgery if he wanted it."
"I'm optimistic because he's dedicated to coming back from this severe hamstring strain," Brown said. "That gives me some optimism. I think he is watching what's going on here and he wants to be a part of it. I think he's going to work his tail off to try and get back."
As the Astros prep for their 113th game of the regular season, the team holds a 2 1/2-game lead for the American League West. Paredes leads Houston with 19 home runs while batting a career-best .259.
With him sidelined, however, the Astros brought back Carlos Correa, who made the switch from shortstop to third base. The team also obtained Ramon Urias to further bolster the position.
