As Per Usual, Jets Fans Are The Star Of The Show
With the 14th pick of the NFL Draft, the New York Jets select Darrelle Revis, CB, Pitt. Mike Tanier of Football Outsiders tells you all about it.
What, Andre Dyson isn't a starting caliber cornerback? Hank Poteat isn't? Shocking. Justin Miller is getting there: he's Pacman Jones with a quarter teaspoonful of common sense. But playoff teams need two cornerbacks, at least, and the Jets, in case you missed last season, are a playoff team.
I like this kid. He's a little of a poor man's Ronde Barber: great athlete, loves to hit and defend the run, smart, a little small and a quarter-step slow. He's a Cover-2 type, which is great, because the Jets play a lot of cover two and have two good young safeties. Revis also reminds me a little of Aaron Glenn, a small corner who played for years with the Jets and made all kinds of big plays. If Revis turns into Glenn, then the Jets made a great decision to trade up.
True story: in high school, Revis played quarterback, cornerback, running back, and wide receiver. All on the same play: he faked a handoff to himself, dropped back, threw deep to himself, then jumped the route and batted the ball away from himself at the last second. The opponents, the Gas House Gorillas, were really surprised.
