Anthony Dixon Turned Down $24,000 To Give Up His Number
49ers running back Anthony Dixon (born 9/24) wore No. 24 in high school. He wore it in college. It's his number. But when he was taken in the sixth round by San Francisco in 2010, he was issued 33. No. 24 belonged to veteran back Michael Robinson, and no one expected Dixon to be around long enough for it to matter.
Dixon made the team, and Robinson was cut.
"I worked hard to get that number when I first got here," Dixon said. "I worked hard to get it off somebody else."
So here comes free agent corner Nnamdi Asomugha, who's also worn No. 24 his entire career. He's older and makes more money than Dixon, but primacy belong to the incumbent. Asomugha tried to buy 24 off of Dixon, going as high as $24,000. No dice. Dixon, who will make $630,000 this season, would rather keep his number.
Would you pass up nearly four percent of your salary for a superstition? I wouldn't, but 96 percent of my salary isn't $606K, so it doesn't matter what I'd do.
