Angels Beat Dodgers On A Rare Walk-Off Strikeout
Photo Credit: Mark J. Terrill/ [object Object] The Angels achieved perhaps the weirdest sort of walk-off win tonight—the walk-off strikeout, pushing them to a 3-2 win over the Dodgers in the ninth inning.
With one out and a runner on first in a tie game, Cameron Maybin came to the plate. A wild pitch by Dodgers reliever Pedro Báez allowed the runner, Ben Revere, to advance to second base. Then, with a 2-2 count, Maybin swung and missed for the third strike—which catcher Yasmani Grandal dropped.
That sent Maybin heading to first, while Grandal scrambled for the ball in order to beat him there with the throw. But he airmailed it—which not only left Maybin with plenty of time to get safely to first base, but, more importantly, gave Revere the chance to start running from second and come home to score the winning run.
And there you have it, the first time that a team has walked off on a strikeout since 2010.
