All 15 Home Teams Won For The First Time In MLB History
It was a very good night to go to the game.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, this was the first time since the dead-ball era that every single game was won by the home team.
Of course, there have only been 30 teams since 1998, but this record goes back a long way, and didn’t just beat out the old one or anything.
(That 1914 slate included four games in the now-defunct Federal League.)
There were three extra-inning games last night, including the two last games to end—the Indians over the Yankees in 16 innings, and the Mariners over the Orioles in 10—adding a little late drama to this bizarre accomplishment that was on absolutely no one’s mind. But other than those, the home teams more than doubled up their guests:
The 15 host teams — the Blue Jays, Rays, Marlins, Mets, Indians, Cubs, Royals, White Sox, Twins, Cardinals, D-backs, Mariners, Padres, Dodgers and Giants — outscored their visitors by an 80-32 margin, including four shutouts.
This all means absolutely nothing, of course. But damned if fun, meaningless anomalies aren’t what make August baseball go.
