Alex Morgan Out Of World Cup Qualifying After This Nasty Ankle Injury
Alex Morgan will miss the rest of the USWNT's World Cup qualifying matches because of a sprained ankle she picked up during Thursday's game against Guatemala. It's an unfortunate set-back for a player with a history of ankle injuries, but thankfully it doesn't look as serious as it could've been.
As you can see above, Morgan's ankle was caught under a falling Guatemalan defender's body, and received a gnarly bend. Morgan was immediately carted off and substituted.
Here's U.S. Soccer with today's update on the injury:
Morgan underwent an MRI this morning that confirmed the sprain, but revealed no additional damage. She will be out an estimated 4-6 weeks to rehabilitate the injury. Morgan will depart the U.S. camp and return home to continue her rehab.
It doesn't look like the injury will do any lasting damage to the USWNT's best player, but she's still out of this competition. The team is crazy deep at the forward position, so there's still practically no chance we don't qualify for next summer's World Cup in Canada. Still, it's a shame we won't get to watch Morgan out there.
