13 North Carolina Players Suspended For Selling Goods In Exchange For Money

The college students were caught back in January selling pairs of team-issued special edition Air Jordans to a local business for as much as $2,500, after which the school forced every player on the team to return their shoes.
Nine players, most notably possible starting quarterback Chazz Surratt, got a four-game suspension, while two others received a two-game ban, and the final two will only miss one game. It’s unclear how the severity of each suspension corresponds with each player’s entrepreneurial efforts.
“These young men knew the rules and are being held responsible for the poor choices they have made,” said North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora, who earns $2,500 approximately every two days. “Accountability is an important core principle in this program. We will learn from this and aim to do better in the future.”
Thankfully, UNC doesn’t have to be too accountable for its players’ flirtation with capitalism. The NCAA has allowed the Tar Heels to stagger its players’ suspensions, which enables the team to better mitigate the consequences of this very important disciplinary action. One hopes the students can still learn the folly of exchanging goods for capital.
